Fahim Speaks
A Warrior-Actor's Odyssey from Afghanistan to Hollywood and Back
A Warrior-Actor's Odyssey from Afghanistan to Hollywood and Back
A beautifully written, uplifting, inspiring story!
By Beth Anne Boardman, Ph.D.
Mr. Fazli and Lt. Col. Moffett have written a compelling, insightful, and
exciting memoir of a real "hero's journey" in their book, Fahim Speaks. The
authors relate details of life in Afghanistan with unblinking clarity and
honesty, and with a refreshingly objective style, forgoing blame, and instead,
letting events speak for themselves. Mr. Fazli courageously speaks about the
harsh realities of life in Afghanistan under Russian authority and the emerging
Taliban, and the tolls this life took on him, his mother, father, and siblings.
All responded to the pressures differently, and these events are related with
frankness, forthrightness, and self-reflection. Mr. Fazli traces his journey
from anger to compassion, from suffering to gratitude, and from dreamer to
man-of-action.
Lt. Col. Moffett lays out the events of Mr. Fazli's early life and escape from Afghanistan
with journalistic clarity and an engaging pace, creating curiosity and a desire to find out
"what happens next" in the reader.
As the story unfolds in the United States, then opens out into the
theatre of U.S. operations in Afghanistan, Lt. Col. Moffett's writing style
hits its stride. Weaving history with current events, the reader is afforded an
expertly crafted and easily understandable account of Fahim's experiences as an
interpreter to the commander of a company of U.S. Marines in one of the most
dangerous areas of conflict in Afghanistan. The poignancy of Fahim's return to
the land of his birth under these circumstances is beautifully and
compassionately written, his respect and love for the place and the people
palpable. At least as beautiful and compelling is Fahim's devotion and
gratitude to his new homeland, the U.S.
Fahim Fazli followed the call to a new life in a new country and faced the "monsters" of challenges and
setbacks, sadness and heartbreak along the way. Through persevering toward his
dream, he achieved what he never thought possible as a young boy, embracing his
gift as an actor in Hollywood. Infused with a deep desire to thank his new
country, Fahim took the extraordinary step of giving up his sweet home-life
with his beautiful wife and daughter for one year, in order to serve the United
States in tangible form, in the uniform of the Marine Corps. The most important
part of any hero's journey is that time when the hero must bring his "boon", or
gift, back to the community. Fahim did this, does this, in an amazing, unique
and inspiring form. Rarely do we read such a beautifully written love-letter
from a man to his country. ~~Beth Anne Boardman, PhD .
Fahim Speaks is an amazing true story!
By Taya Paige
This is an amazing true story that tackles a global issue through the a
chronology of the life of an ordinary Afghan boy who endured what so many have,
however, his strength, respect and courage is extraordinary which makes for a
story that is beyond inspirational. Fahim Fazli is so candid and Michael Moffett
has a profound way of capturing the history of Afghanistan, while sharing the
details of Fahim's story in a way that makes you feel truly connected. You
won't want to put it down! This story should be shared in middle schools around
the world as an example of how following your dream and being true to who you
are can effect the lives of so many people, and will create happiness within
that nobody can ever take away.

Fahim Speaks allows its readers to learn about a part of the world which
is so far away. Yet, we are given the opportunity to read about Afghanistan
and its struggles to stay whole in the face of great hardships and dangers.
The telling of Fahim's journey an the struggles of his birthpeople let us,
the more fortunate, appreciate the stark beauty of this land. A marvelous
story written with the skill of an excellent writer, Lt. Colonel Michael Moffett.

This book was an unexpected journey for me - I found I traveled thousands
and thousands of miles to find that all of us have hopes and dreams ... some,
like Fahim, are courageous enough to defy the odds of acheiving those dreams
and then, honorably give back to worlds - both of his homes - for allowing him
to thrive. There is a unique and uplifting story in this book for everyone.
An Unnatural Hero
By Buzzard
I have not been an avid reader for more than a quarter of a century. After
learning that "Fahim Speaks" was available, I ordered it and anxiously awaited
the book's arrival. Within 24 hours of it's arrival, I had completed this
amazing book. I only put this book down, to sleep as well as feed and walk my
dog. Yes, I continued to read it as I ate. This book has something for every
American, however, it's those "Americans" who feel a sense of entitlement that
would benefit most from reading Fahim's story. It is a story of an unnatural hero.

Don't judge this book by its cover. It is so much more than a war novel.
This is a story that will make you reflect on your own life, love, and

Very nice story from start to finish this guy fahim was in ironman movie

Great US Marine Story,

Amazing story all true; about an Afghan immigrant coming to America. He
appeared in several Hollywood movies. Then he became a translator for the U.S.
and worked on the front lines with the Marines in Afghanistan only to return
again to the U.S. He is truly a story of interest, a great patriotic American;
and communicates a fresh view of the world. Really a must read.

What an outstanding book. A true adventure story of man who escaped war in
his homeland, only to return to war in his homeland to help both his native
country as well as his new country. Mike Moffett did a brilliant job of taking
the real life story and crafting it into a book that cannot be put down once it
is started. FAHIM SPEAKS is a must read.
"In the trenches"
Hollywood actor drops it all to help in Afghanistan
By Deb Baker / Concord Monitor columnist
I almost didn't pick up Fahim Speaks, by Fahim Fazli with Michael Moffett.
Ever since the winter of 1990, when I watched "Siege of Firebase Gloria" with an
enthusiastic crowd of Marines (one of whom I had recently married) in a small
apartment, I have shied away from war stories. But this column is about what you
might like to read, so I tried Fahim Speaks, and I'm glad I did.
Moffett, head of NHTI's Sports Management Department and a retired lieutenant
colonel, was working as a Marine Corps historian in Afghanistan when he met
Fahim Fazli. Moffett writes in the book's introduction: "I realized that he
epitomized what so many Americans yearn to see - an immigrant-refugee from an
Islamic culture unafraid to express a deep love for and commitment to his
adopted homeland."
Fahim grew up in Kabul. Because of his parents' affiliation with
anti-communists, his mother, elder brother and two sisters fled to America in
1979. Fahim and his brother were taunted as "Sons of Reagan," and left
Afghanistan with their father four years later. The beginning of Fahim Speaks is
the story of Afghanistan's troubled politics, Fahim's rocky relationship with
his parents, the pain of family separation and refugee life.
It's also about Fahim's dream of acting. Despite his family's objections and
casting stereotypes that earn him terrorist roles, he pursues his goal. I found
all of this interesting but was sometimes confused because the book skips back
and forth between Hollywood and Fahim's boyhood. His reflections range from war
to relationships, including his arranged Afghan marriages, both of which were
short and disastrous.
So far, it is a typical memoir, except for the geo-political details - a
coming-of-age/reconciling-family-hopes-and-personal-dreams story. Then Fahim
tells his wife that his comfortable career and coveted Screen Actors Guild
membership isn't enough. He's 40 years old, finally happy, has a young daughter,
but one night he sees a commercial seeking military interpreters.
Fahim trains with Mission Essential Personnel and joins a Marine Corps unit
preparing to deploy. The risks are clear when he is issued a uniform nametag
that says "Hollywood" so his family won't be targeted. But Fahim revels in a new
sense of purpose.
In the last four chapters of Fahim Speaks, readers hear what it's like to
live and work with Marines in the field in Afghanistan. Fahim clearly admires
and respects them, and his unit quickly realizes that he is an incredible asset.
From conversations about what religions share to simple suggestions to defuse
tensions (such as feeding watch dogs protecting civilians, instead of shooting
them), Fahim smoothes the way for the Marines and builds important local
relationships.
His success makes him a Taliban target. An elder tells him, "The Talibs know
about the translator called 'Hollywood.' . . . They know that when you move on
from a village, the people you leave behind are happy with Americans. . . . They
really hate Hollywood. They want him dead."
Despite the danger, Fahim embraces every challenge. I was struck that a
person who grew up with so much personal and political turmoil and violence in a
chronically broken country could be such an empathetic, open-minded, big-hearted
guy.
Fahim teaches the Marines about tribal relationships, the significance of
revenge in Afghan culture, and ways America can help Afghan women. He also tells
Afghans why they should trust and cooperate with Americans, and he counsels both
sides to listen carefully to each other and to work together against systemic
corruption that stymies both the U.S. effort and local Afghans. There are IEDs
and attacks, but also positive breakthroughs.
The young Marines Fahim works with eagerly learn about Afghan culture and
want to do the right things to work well with locals. His unit's leaders are
smart and engaged at every level, and trust their translators' advice. Fahim
also mentions things that didn't go smoothly, but this book describes American
engagement in the war on terror at its best. Fahim returns home with a
well-earned sense that he's made a difference for both his
countries
Who knew? I like a good war story, even if it occasionally lapses into Marine
jargon.

Accolades to an American!,
The story of Fahim Fazli reflects the love and passion for what true believers
of the tribe call the American dream. The hopes and dreams of all who wish for
freedom and the chance to be something greater than the whole yet proud to
protect the whole on those principles of God, Corp and Country. It speaks of
sacred thoughts and cherished hopes of all great citizens who believe in the
freedom of man and the oopportunity to challenge those who would take said
freedoms and the desire to protect those who wish to always have those freedoms.
This is a book well worth reading which revitalizes the true spirit on which
this country, the United States of Amercia, was founded. Written by a man whose
birthplace and adopted country are different yet all in both crave these values.
Thank you for your service to your country and your most enjoyable book- Semper

Thank you for the copy of your new book, FAHIM

I remember Fahim well. His contributions to our success in Helmand were significant. In addition
to his service as an interpreter and advisor to our Marines in the most dangerous, front line areas, he provided me with valuable insights and advice on dealing with Afghans at all levels.
On a personal note, thank you for helping to tell the story about coalition efforts in
Afghanistan and for the help you provide to our returning wounded warriors.

Military Writers Society of America (MWSA) Review
Fahim Fazli blends his unique American experience with his native Afghan roots,
resulting in a tasteful reader’s concoction. He made me feel good about American
society, our devotion to Afghanistan, and for the Good Warrior that never gives
up or goes bad. Fazli’s life-journey starts in Kabul and his family scatters
under the oppression of the Soviets. FAHIM SPEAKS comes from a different
perspective and there are so many twists … Young Fazli lives in a
Pakistani-based refugee camp that is later depicted in the 2006 movie, Charlie
Wilson’s War, about the American influenced, Afghan-Soviet conflict. Fahim Fazli
is the cultural advisor on the movie set. Life’s peculiarities are addressed in
the book and they make you think ... Ironically, Fazli always wanted to be the
good guy in his highly successful movie career but was typically hired as the
terrorist. I had seen him - but didn’t know - in several of my favorite films
(The Unit, 24, Iron Man). Fahim Fazli is a man of honor and courage ... A
Hollywood actor in his forties and comfortably settled with his wife and
daughter, Fazli chooses to pay his country back. He volunteers to serve as an
Interpreter with our Marines in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. This book
educates and cultural histories are probed. In a graceful way, Fahim Fazli
tackles delicate issues and his writing style gave me hope. His positive
attitude and likeable behavior allowed me to better understand complex concerns.
I am grateful for the encouragement. FAHIM SPEAKS gets my highest recommendation
– it’s a must read. What a TRULY AMERICAN story of perseverance and service!

I'm a historian for the Marine Corps and recently I came across the compelling story
of an Afghan-American Fahim Fazli who volunteered to return to his native
homeland to aid the U.S. Marines as an interpreter. As a boy Fahim helped the Afghan freedom fighters by gaining intelligence on Soviet troops who had invaded his country. Because of the threat of Communist
informants to his his family, Fahim escaped to America as a teenager and later
made his way to Hollywood and eventually got into the movies. He has worked
opposite Robert Downey Jr in Iron Man. He also recently fulfilled his dream of
becoming part of the Screen Actors Guild however on the set of the movie Charlie
Wilson's War- a true story about the CIA operations to arm the Afghan freedom
fighters against the Soviets Fahim decided he need to repay our great nation for
its generosity and opportunity.
Fahim gave up his lucrative Hollywood career to become an Afghan interpreter for the
Marine Corps. He deployed to some of the most dangerous provinces in Afghanistan
to help our Marines forge a bond with local Afghans and bridge to cultural gap
to make their deployment not only successful but make sure the Marines came home
to their families again. This man is a true American if you get a

“FAHIM SPEAKS” NOMINATED AS TOP BIOGRAPHY BY MWSA
CONCORD, N.H. – The annual Military Writers Society of America Awards Banquet will be held in
Dayton, Ohio, on Sa...turday, September 29, and the book FAHIM SPEAKS,
co-authored by NHTI Professor Michael Moffett, is one of six nominees for top
honors in the biography genre.
FAHIM SPEAKS was nominated by MWSA reviewer
Hodge Wood, who in a June book review stated that the book combines Fazli’s
“unique American experience with his native Afghan roots, resulting in a
tasteful reader’s concoction. He made me feel good about American society, our
devotion to Afghanistan, and for the Good Warrior that never gives up or goes

A native Afghan who escaped the chaos of his homeland in 1983, Fazli eventually made his way to
California, assimilated into American society, and became a citizen. Eventually
he also became a Hollywood actor and a member of the Screen Actors Guild, with
numerous movie and television credits on his resume.
In 2009, at age 43, Fazli opted to leave the comfort of southern California to serve as a translator
for a Marine Corps infantry battalion in Afghanistan’s volatile Helmand
Province. Fazli enjoyed spectacular success serving as a bridge between American
and Afghan cultures, and won plaudits from USMC leaders from every level – as
well as the enmity of the Taliban, who put a price on his head.
A professor of Sports Management at NHTI, Moffett was doing a special USMC assignment in
Afghanistan as a reserve Lieutenant Colonel when he met Fazli in the crossroads
town of Delaram in 2010. The two stayed in touch and collaborated on FAHIM
SPEAKS throughout 2011. The book was published by Warriors Publishing Group in
March of 2012.The book features a cover endorsement from veteran Hollywood
actor Tom Hanks, who starred in the movie “Charlie Wilson’s War,” a story of
American involvement in Afghanistan, for which Fazli served as cultural
advisor.Moffett is looking forward to attending the event in Dayton.
“It’s been very rewarding to see FAHIM SPEAKS receive the critical acclaim that
it has,” said Moffett. “I always thought Fahim’s journey was extraordinarily
inspirational and consequential, and it’s gratifying that so many who have read
the book agree.”

school and he is still in the service. Then my younger brother joined the Navy.
And then came 9/11, that's when I realized that the freedom and democracy that I
left Vietnam for were being threaten, and I signed up to join the Air Force. I
served on active duty for 7 years as a linguist, then I left active duty to join
the reserve. I am still in the Air Force reserve today but during my time on

When I purchased "Fahim Speaks" I was
not sure what to expect. Was this going to be another book that spoke mainly of
battles and war? What I found was a book that spoke powerfully of understanding.
As Fahim speaks of his childhood in Afghanistan, his escape to the US, his life as a struggling actor, finding true love (of both a woman and a country) and of returning to Afghanistan in the service of the US Marines the reader is led on a journey of understanding. I read with interest as Fahim developed an understanding of the cultural influences that created the abusive/subservient relationship of his parents and led him into two failed arranged marriages. Fahim's insight into understanding his culture shaped his life and also became invaluable to the US marines he served with as an interpreter. He spent many hours helping the marines understand the people of the country they were going into which kept them safe on many occasions.I want to thank Fahim Fazli and Michael Moffett for this inspirational book that helped me to understand a culture that was very foreign to me. Thank you for the opportunity to walk in Fahim's shoes. I highly recommend this book to all.

Fahim It was so nice to connect with you today brother
and catch up. Rostee I am so happy for and proud of you brother! Nobody deserved
to work on, "Rock the Kasbah", as much as you brother. I also appreciate your
words to Barry Levinson, in regards to casting me. It wasn't meant for me to be
on this one with you, but bakhire the next. So I didn't get a chance to tell
you, that I finished your book. Even went back into it and highlighted some of
my favorite parts, and parts that filled me with inspiration.
Congratulations on an amazing book brother! Mubarak
bawshaa!!!
It was such an easy read. Your story was so so so
interesting and I couldn't put your book down. Finished it in 3 days. Would've
finished it sooner if it wasn't for work on set. haha!
I was so impressed at your family life and up bringing.
My own father and relatives have shared with me a similar up brining. But what
really impressed me, was moments you wrote that changed you. For example in one
of your chapters you wrote about an evening when your dad beat you and your
brother. You had said you saw in your brothers eyes, hate and anger. A face
that looked exactly like the man who did it, your father. You expressed that
you never wanted your face to look that way and therefore promised yourself
never to be that and hit your future kids or wife. Seriously for you to be
AFGHAN, and a MALE and at such a young age, and to have that kind of epiphany
in that moment. To know that you did not want to become that, especially in a
male dominant culture, speaks volumes of the man that you are today! Shows you
are a wise, old soul and figured it out at such a young age. For this is what
led you to survival and making it to America.
I loved how you pointed out, how many Afghans today
complain about money, or America. When you point out how LUCKY we all are!
Afghan or not, how lucky we all are to live in a FREE country! You are right,
people take our freedom here for granted, they truly don't understand oppression
or a, "HARD LIFE". They should live in AFGHANISTAN or AFRICA for a year and
witness what is happening there. Then they'll come crawling back to this soil,
kissing the ground, and never wanting to leave again.
I loved all the description of your experience on the
film, "Charlie Wilson's War". How cool was that? haha! Even what you wrote about
Julia Roberts and her questions to you and your witty responses. So cool! What
an awesome experience. And to work with not only Tom Hanks, and Philip Seymour
Hoffman (God bless his soul), but to also work with and meet Charlie Wilson
himself.
I saw Charlie Wilson's War when it first came out and
loved it. The second time on DVD when my wife Brittany and I watched Charlie
Wilson's War the film, I commented to her at the end, that the film was very
accurate. Whoever the cultural advisor was did an awesome job. It was a true
representation of Afghanistan. Then I remembered, oh yea, that was FAHIM. haha!
Go figure!
The fact that you have always stood your ground. Listened
to your heart and soul, your intuition is so inspiring to me brother. Inspires
me to be a better human being, to love more, to manifest the life and career
that I want!
Your stories about your past two marriages cracked me up!
haha! So Afghana. I thought you handled those situations well, and good for you
to sticking to your guns and what you believe in. Your true happiness and not
settling!
I feel all of America should read this book. It gives a
soft timeline of what TRUE AFGHANISTAN used to be like, and unfortunately, how
it ended up to what it is today.
Brother another thing that truly impressed me was you
listening to that inner voice. That intuition. knowing you had to help your
country out some how. Both AFG & your new country The US. Leaving hollywood
and enlisting for one of the most dangerous TERP positions avail took some true
balls, bravery and heart! Good for you bro! You are the prime example of a True
Warrior! For a True Warrior has: (heart, compassion, love, tears, laughter,
smarts, strength, bravery integrity, loyalty, tenacity, leadership and smiles!)
Loved the nickname in the marines, "HOLLYWOOD". HAHA!
Classic! Loved the story of your roommates, the Three Amigos!
Your book is so good Brother! This should be a mandatory
curriculum for schools. I feel in history classes when high school students
learn about Afghanistan, they should read this book. To hear it from the eyes
of a native that made it hear, and went back to make a difference. As well as
serving his new country! What a great balance.
I could go on and on...But you get my point!
Love you brother. Congrats again on all of your success,
your family, your book, etc..
Can't wait to see this made into a
film,
Jaylen Moore
PS
I wish I could've met your mother. She was such a strong woman! Truly an example of
strength, heart, and love! God Bless her soul brother!

This is a story that will make you reflect on your own life, love, and
patriotism.
GREAT STORY,
By Gudmundsen
Very nice story from start to finish this guy fahim was in ironman movie
and many other tv shows. He put his hollywood career on hold and joined the
marines as a translator in one of the deadliest provinces of Afghanistan.
Great US Marine Story,
By Max and Eileen
Amazing story all true; about an Afghan immigrant coming to America. He
appeared in several Hollywood movies. Then he became a translator for the U.S.
and worked on the front lines with the Marines in Afghanistan only to return
again to the U.S. He is truly a story of interest, a great patriotic American;
and communicates a fresh view of the world. Really a must read.
Must Read!
By Mike Raymond
Fahim returns home with a
well-earned sense that he's made a difference for both his
countries
Who knew? I like a good war story, even if it occasionally lapses into Marine
jargon.

Just finished the book. It was a very interesting story.
Fahim has a great talent for writing. He is so courageous. Amazing
coincidence about MGen Nicholson.

Just finished the book...what a great story! Fahim is truly inspiring. We should
never take for granted the freedom we enjoy in this country.

" Real People of Orange County." Her PODcasts are finally up and running
and I thought you would find her first show very interesting. She interviews an
Afghan man who has compelling, fascinating, emotional, and chilling story to
tell. It will make you feel proud for your country and grateful for people like
him. I hope you can take the time to listen to "Fahim Speaks"

Rafter Ph.D. International Professor and Chief Campaign Strategist and author of CHURCHFARE states that "In my 35 years as a minister, I have never seen someone who loves America more or is more committed to doing CHURCHFARE for our solders and wounded warriors as Fahim Fazli. While many just talk shop Fahim is a man who puts it all out there on the line. It is our hope to help in anyway we can partner with Fahim to promote Fahim Speaks: A Warrior-Actor's Odyssey from Afghanistan to
Hollywood and Back so as to help build and support CHURCHFARE Veterans and

Fi, Gunny.

A great read. I understand things so much better now.
Nothing I have ever read in newspapers or seen on TV has provided such valuable
insight into this country and culture that is so different than ours. What a
story!

Dear Professor Moffett:
Thank you for the copy of your new book, FAHIM
SPEAKS: A Warrior-Actor's Odyssey from Afghanistan to Hollywood and
Back. It's a great addition to my library.

This man is a true American if you get a
chance please check out the site for his new book which details his inspiring
story he wrote with one of my co-workers LtCol Michael Moffett
BOOK BY NHTI PROFESSOR MICHAEL MOFFETT UP FOR AWARD;
He made me feel good about American society, our
devotion to Afghanistan, and for the Good Warrior that never gives up or goes
bad ... FAHIM SPEAKS gets my highest recommendation – it’s a must read. What a

Fahim,
I've been a member of VFT since the first day
and have heard many great speech. Your speech brought me to tears sir. Thank you
for sharing your personal life with us. My parent left the communist country of
Vietnam to come to the US so that we can have a better life, not suppressed by
communist. I came here, my older brother joined the military right after high
school and he is still in the service.
I am still in the Air Force reserve today but during my time on
active duty, I've deployed to the southwest Asia numerous of time. I share you
feeling, compassion, and dedication to the men and women of this great nation.
We are their guests, and they have given us many things that our birth countries
were not able to provide. Thank you sir. If there will ever be a time that you
would like to collaborate with me for your projects, please don't hesitate.
