DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to the women of the world, especially the women of Afghanistan, and most especially to my mother Fahima. Who was this Afghan warrior woman? In her family, Fahima was the head -- not the tail. She had a sweet, pure heart and clean soul. She found her happiness with God and her instincts were to always be kind and merciful. She often said "When you pray to God..., do not tell it to me. Your prayers are between you and the creator." She saved lives in Afghanistan as a midwife and she saved lives in America by serving the handicapped in the nursing homes of Hacienda Heights, California. She was known for her unconditional mercy and responded to calls from her patients at all hours of the night. She had a constant desire to help and love people and an intuitive ability to understand peoples' motives and
intentions. She could sense danger from the crooked and perverse – whom she tried to understand, not confront. She set an example of decency, kindness, mercy, and gentleness to inspire the best in everyone. She always smiled and held her pain inside. Fahima did not have an abundance of material possessions, but carried herself as though rich. She cared about the less-fortunate and often donated to the Salvation Army. Fahima was born to fight for a fairer world and her father taught her to never give up and to always keep going, despite life's many challenges. Her mother died when she was seven years of age and she was raised by a step-mother. Cultural tradition led to an arranged marriage at age 16. After her first baby died during childbirth, she dedicated herself to raising youngsters, and had five healthy children. Fahima provided the inspiration for her son to put on an American military uniform and
return to war-torn Afghanistan to bring people together and save lives with the United States Marines. She inspired him to be a bridge between cultures and communities. She didn't ask for much, except for love from her children. She achieved her goal of becoming a nurse against all odds and cultural restrictions. Destiny brought her family members to America so they could follow their dreams. Her son’s dream was to be an actor and that dream came true.
"We share the same name, and it is an honor for me to be her
son. I hope her example can inspire women the way it inspired me to protect my
wife, daughter, and others who have been in my life. Cancer never ran in our
family, but her worst fears about that illness sadly came true at age 66. I wish
I could have protected her from it all. And I wish she could have seen this book
project which is dedicated to her." – Fahim Fazli, 2012
