To my beautiful daughter, Sophia Fazli , I do not want to leave you money, cars, or jewelry; I want to leave you these books—my life experiences, my lessons, and a legacy that you can carry forward and pass from generation to generation. I want you to share their message with your children, with the children of Afghanistan, and with the children of the United States of America: education is one of the most powerful gifts in life. When I was 12 years old, in 1979, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan changed my life, and I was unable to finish my education. I have only a ninth-grade education, but I taught myself many of the most important lessons I know through life, struggle, courage, work, and perseverance. I want my story to remind you and future generations never to take education for granted—go to school, learn, grow, and use your knowledge to make the world a better place. I also want you to protect women, children, animals, women’s rights, and the rights and dreams of young girls. If you have education and the drive to use it, you can overcome challenges and create a meaningful future. These books are not my wealth; they are my legacy. I hope you will protect them, learn from them, and pass them from generation to generation so that my journey from Afghanistan to the United States of America—and everything I learned along the way—will continue to inspire others.
